The Constant Bridesmaid Gets Engaged…

…And she has no idea what she’s doing.

The gal who has participated in more weddings than she has fingers to count them on is getting married. This is big news, guys, not that you needed reminding.

I got engaged on August 8th, 2014, and it was perfect. My now fiancé tricked me into having drinks with him at a Chicago bar, and he proposed on a city rooftop, with a little bit of help from the wait staff. I immediately started giggling, said yes, and have been staring at the sparkler on my left hand ever since. Right after that, he tricked me again and said we should go home to call our families and change clothes, because we had a reservation at 9:00. Turns out, that too was a lie. Both of our families were in my apartment, waiting to share the special moments with us.

Just to brag on my guy for a minute, he called each member of my family to ask for their consent and to scheme and plan the surprise proposal. He even called my best friends and had them join in on the fun. What a guy. We had a vacation already planned to Greece to go visit his brother and were leaving a couple days later. That part was great because we had a chance to enjoy our engagement for a few weeks before the wedding festivities took over — excellent timing on his part.

Once we returned, we got in wedding mode super quickly. We are getting married in mid-April, which is just about 200 days from now. Let me tell you, planning a wedding for roughly 300 people in seven months is not an easy task. But we are going to have fun trying.  What I have been most blown away by is the endless support from our family and friends. It’s a reminder to be gracious, even-tempered and thankful throughout the process, because we are surrounded by really fantastic people.

But the real question is, how does this affect us.

Long before I was a bride-to-be, I was a bridesmaid. And I will never, ever leave my fellow bridesmaids behind. I do, however, have a new perspective on weddings as a whole. No, this isn’t going to turn into a wedding planning blog, but my new-found knowledge will likely increase my sensitivity to the brides that have come before me. I’m already amazed by some aspects of weddings that I just didn’t understand before — but more on that later. Long story short, things aren’t going to change around here very much, as long as the planning doesn’t warp my mind too aggressively.

Anyway, 200-ish days to go.

  1. You are TOO CUTE! I can’t wait to read more about the planning. :) I’m so excited for you!

(I hated wedding planning and hope you enjoy it more than I did! We had a quick 6 month engagement and I was so glad it wasn’t longer!)

    • Thanks, love! I am so excited for you and your growing family! Love you dearly. And so far, I have mixed feelings about this planning stuff :) But I did find a dress, which was a HUGE relief! We are far overdue for a loooong phone date. Miss yoU!
